As photonic chips break through technological barriers and quantum computing reshapes the industrial landscape, a landmark cross-sector collaboration uniting academic authority, scientific research and industrial platforms is set to unfold.

At the beginning of the new year, Chip journal, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University–Wuxi Institute of Photonic Chips (CHIPX), and Laser World of Photonics China officially reached a strategic cooperation agreement. During the 2026 Laser World of Photonics China, the three parties will focus on quantum computing and photonic chips as core tracks, launching a series of featured programs—including frontier forums, dedicated exhibition zones and a quantum museum—to jointly build an innovative platform integrating academic exchange, achievement showcase and science popularization.

Backed by Messe München, Laser World of Photonics China has been rooted in Shanghai since 2006, continuously cultivating the Chinese market while radiating across the Asia-Pacific region. The exhibition deeply connects high-quality exhibitors and professional buyers from the laser, optics and optoelectronics industries across Asia and worldwide. After more than two decades of development, it has become a core hub in the global optoelectronics industrial ecosystem. In 2026, Laser World of Photonics China will debut a new exhibition area - Integrated Optoelectronics and Optical Communications, focusing on the complete industrial chain from “devices → modules → systems → application scenarios,” covering key fields such as 5G-Advanced, data centers and AI computing power. The exhibition area will also showcase cutting-edge photonics innovations, aiming to build a global hub for the optical communications industry and set new benchmarks for industry development.

As the world’s only comprehensive international journal dedicated exclusively to the chip field, Chip has been selected for the “High-Starting-Point New Journal Program” and the “Phase II English-Language Journal Program” under the China Excellence Action Plan for Science and Technology Journals, jointly implemented by the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The journal ranks in the Q1 category in disciplines including electrical and electronic engineering, optics and applied physics. In recent years, Chip has continuously focused on frontier research in quantum computing and chip-based technologies, publishing multiple high-quality papers in related fields. In 2025, the journal launched a special issue on heterogeneous integrated photonic chips, aiming to establish a key academic platform for quantum chip research.

The Shanghai Jiao Tong University–Wuxi Institute of Photonic Chips (CHIPX) serves as a model of university-local collaborative innovation. It has established China’s first pilot production line for photonic chips, achieving full closed-loop operation in 2025 and being selected as one of the first batch of key pilot platforms cultivated by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. CHIPX has undertaken multiple major projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission, and won the highest award—the “Leading Scientific and Technological Achievement Award”—at the 2025 World Internet Conference. It has become a pivotal force in the development of China’s photonic chip industry. Leveraging their respective strengths in academic dissemination, scientific research and industrial resources, the three parties will work together to build a virtuous cycle in which “academia leads research, research supports industry, and industry feeds back into academia,” contributing to the cultivation of trillion-yuan new-quality productive force industrial clusters.

Quantum Computing and Photonic Chips Innovation Forum

With its exponential parallel processing capability, quantum computing is regarded as a disruptive technology capable of breaking the limits of classical computing. Among various technical routes, optical quantum computing—featuring high stability, room-temperature operation and compatibility with existing semiconductor manufacturing processes—is widely considered the most promising pathway toward large-scale, universal quantum computing. In this process, chip-level integration has become a widely recognized core development direction.

Centered on this theme, the three parties will jointly host the Quantum Computing and Photonic Chips Innovation Forum on March 18, alongside Laser World of Photonics China. Renowned experts, enterprise representatives and investment professionals from the field will be invited to engage in keynote speeches and panel discussions, jointly exploring key trends and frontier issues in the industry.

Quantum Computing Museum and Industry Showcase Zone

During the exhibition, the three parties will jointly create a Quantum Computing Museum integrating science education, technology demonstration, interactive experience and industrial connectivity. Targeting both professional audiences and the general public, the exhibition will present achievements in quantum technology through interactive installations, exhibits and guided explanations, building a communication bridge between frontier technologies, public understanding and industrial applications. In addition, leading institutions and enterprises such as the Shanghai Jiao Tong University–Wuxi Institute of Photonic Chips, Turing Quantum and Origin Quantum will participate in the exhibition, collectively showcasing cutting-edge technologies, core products and comprehensive solutions in the fields of photonic chips and quantum computing.

Taking this cooperation as a new starting point and the 2026 Laser World of Photonics China as a key opportunity, the three parties will continue to deepen and expand their collaboration. We sincerely invite researchers, entrepreneurs, investors and industry enthusiasts from around the world in the fields of photonic chips and quantum computing to follow and participate in this cross-sector collaborative event, and to join us in shaping the future of the quantum industry.
